Is Amber Heard in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom?

In the first trailer for “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” released in September 2023, fans had to closely observe to catch a brief glimpse of Amber Heard’s character, Mera, towards the end. This seemed to align with Heard’s statement that her role in the sequel was “very pared down.” With the film now in theaters, let’s delve into how much Mera is actually involved in the sequel. (Mild spoilers ahead.)

Despite her brief appearance in the trailer, Amber Heard’s character Mera plays a more substantial role than anticipated in “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.” While Patrick Wilson’s Orm is featured alongside Aquaman in promotional material, he doesn’t make an appearance until the second act when Aquaman goes to break him out of prison. In the initial part of the movie, it’s primarily Aquaman and Mera, akin to the first film.

During the attack on Atlantis by Black Manta and his forces, Mera actively defends Atlantis and sustains an injury from Black Manta, a scene briefly glimpsed in the trailer. Although she is sidelined in the middle act, focused on Aquaman and Orm, Mera returns to take an active role in the final third, showcasing hero moments as she saves various characters.

The extent of Amber Heard’s role as Mera in “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” and whether it was initially intended to be larger remains unclear. During her defamation trial against Johnny Depp in May 2022, Heard asserted that her appearance was a “very pared-down version” compared to the original plan, citing the removal of action scenes involving her character.

Director James Wan seemingly contradicted this claim in September 2023 after the first trailer was released. He stated that the sequel’s focus was always on Arthur and Orm, emphasizing a shift from the romance action-adventure of the first movie to a bromance action-adventure in the second, aligning with his original vision.
