First trailer for Top Boy star Kane Robinson’s new Netflix movie The Kitchen

Netflix has unveiled the initial trailer for “The Kitchen,” marking Daniel Kaluuya’s directorial debut.

Kaluuya co-directed the dystopian sci-fi alongside Kibwe Tavares and collaborated with Joe Murtagh on the screenplay. The film is based on an idea that Kaluuya, Tavares, and producer Daniel Emmerson conceived in a barbershop a decade ago.

As depicted in the trailer, “The Kitchen” is set in a future version of London approximately 20 years from now, where the wealth gap has reached extreme levels, and all social housing has been eliminated.

All that remains is “The Kitchen,” a community unwilling to vacate their homes. Izi (portrayed by Top Boy star Kane Robinson) is one of the residents, and along with 12-year-old Benji (Jedaiah Bannerman), they face challenges in a system that is stacked against them.

“The Kitchen” is set to be released in select UK cinemas on January 12, 2024, before becoming available on Netflix on January 19, 2024, providing something for your watch list in the new year.

The film also features former Arsenal and England footballer Ian Wright as the pirate radio station DJ, Lord Kitchener, along with Hope Ikpoku Jr, BackRoad Gee, Cristale, Teija Kabs, and Demmy Ladipo.

After its world premiere at the BFI London Film Festival in October, “The Kitchen” has received a solid 83% rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on its initial reviews.

Deadline wrote, “A genuine vision of a nightmarish, dystopian future that will ring alarm bells for any city-dweller familiar with the depressing effects of gentrification,” in one of several positive reviews.

IndieWire noted, “If the relationship drama at its core doesn’t fully connect with the elegant brutalism of its visual language, there is, nevertheless, a lot to admire in both aspects.”
